Chapter 8

“Hey, baby daddy! Does this mean we are not going to see you at O’Shea’s anymore on Friday nights?” Tomas, a fireman and a personal friend of Liam’s, joked as he entered the locker room of the firehouse.

Liam tossed some clothing from his locker into his duffle bag and then looked over his shoulder at Tomas. “What are you talking about?”

“You know, now that you’re gonna have a kid,” replied Tony, a paramedic on the team, from across the locker room. “We haven’t seen Dan since his kid was born, and Mike hasn’t been able to go out on a Friday night since he got engaged. Looks like you’re the next victim of the ball and chain syndrome as our latest baby daddy.”

Liam took his jacket out of his locker and tossed it on the bench next to his duffle bag. It was eight-thirty on Friday morning, and his twenty-four-hour shift was over. He was eager to pick up the dogs from daycare and crash at home for at least six hours. It had been a long night with back-to-back calls, fortunately with no injuries but plenty of work for several straight hours. He hadn’t spoken to Taryn since Tuesday, and he was pissed because he was certain she had been intentionally avoiding him. She had sent two separate text messages to him, one on Tuesday and another on Wednesday, stating that she had to work late, having to catch up on paperwork once at home and then asking that he not stop over. What the hell was going on with her? In fact, what was going on with everyone?

“Baby daddy? What are you talking about?” Liam was tempted to stop at the clinic on his way home from the station, but he needed to pick up the dogs. He was already spending a small fortune on their day care until the dynamic duo learned to stop chewing on his furniture, and he didn’t need to have any extra hours tacked on to his bill.

“Ha! Don’t act like you don’t know what we’re talking about,” chimed in Mateo, another fireman and one of the newest members of the team, seated on a bench not far from Liam, changing into his street clothes. “We all follow the Mavens, and while Lenny’s initials may also be LM, his wife is a school teacher and not a vet. They had been referring to you.”

Tomas chuckled as he leaned over to tie his street shoes. “Besides, Lenny already has five kids. I saw him yesterday when he was getting off shift. He said, his wife gets pregnant again, and he’s not going to be at the mattress store. He’s going to be at the morgue.” A round of laughter filled the room.

“And Tony confirmed it when the two of you stopped by the Vet’s office. He says the Doc asked you if the other Doc was pregnant, and you said yes,” added Ryan, the second paramedic on the squad.

Tony had been hunched over, tying his gym shoe and paused to lift his head.
